How To Get Here

There’s no bridge from the mainland to Great Chebeague Island, so the options for getting to the golf club all involve a boat of one kind of another.

Most off-island golfers take the Chebeague Transportation Company ferry from Cousins Island to Chebeague’s Stone Wharf, which is about 200 yards from the golf clubhouse.  To catch the ferry, park at the transportation company’s parking lot on Route 1 in Cumberland.  The lot is about a quarter mile south of Exit 15 off I-295.  A bus leaves the lot promptly a half-hour before the ferry departs Cousins for Chebeague.  The ferry ride takes 15 minutes.  (See chebeaguetrans.com for more information, including the bus and ferry schedule and fees.)

Casco Bay Lines has several daily ferries to Chebeague from downtown Portland. These ferries land at Chandler’s Cove, at the southwest end of Chebeague, four miles from the golf course. There currently is no taxi service on Chebeague. See cascobaylines.com for ferry times and costs.

Water taxis are available to transport golfers from Portland and other nearby points on the mainland to Chebeague.  A new, Chebeague-based water taxi service began at the end of 2016.  Chebeague Water Taxi offers 10 percent off the fare from any location in Casco Bay to the Stone Wharf on Chebeague.  Golfers may also park at the Pay and Display lot at 58 Fore Street in Portland.  The fare from this lot is $95--a 20 percent discount off the regular fare from this location!   See www.ChebeagueWaterTaxi.com

Private boats.   Small motorboats (17 feet and under) and dinghies may tie up on Chebeague’s Stone Wharf for an hourly fee ($5-7); larger boats may anchor or pick up one of the Chebeague Island Inn’s eight yellow moorings, available to the Inn’s lunch, dinner and overnight guests. Contact the harbor master at harbormaster@chebeague.net or the Chebeague Island Inn at chebeagueislandinn.com for more information.

Great Chebeague Golf Club Covid-19 Policies

Updated May 28, 2021

Three recent developments significantly impact the Covid-19 protocols with which the Great Chebeague Golf Club will begin its season. On April 16, 2021, Maine Governor Janet Mills eliminated the checklist that had prescribed Covid-19 prevention practices for golf courses during the 2020 season.  Instead, golf courses are now governed by the General Guidance that applies to most other businesses in Maine.  On April 27, 2021, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control issued new guidelines regarding wearing face coverings in outdoor settings.  Later that day, the Mills administration removed its requirement that people wear face coverings in outdoor settings.  The following protocols reflect these new governmental guidelines.

General

Golfers and employees shall not come to the club if they are feeling ill, have any of the symptoms associated with Covid-19 or have been exposed to a person who is displaying these symptoms.

  1. The course is open to club members, their relatives and other visitors to the island.  Per long-standing club policy, the course is also open to year-round Chebeague residents who play for free after 5:00 p.m.

  2. Group events such as scrambles and Swatfests are allowed.

Facility Practices

  1. Face coverings are encouraged while in the clubhouse.

  2. Members are encouraged to sign-in by calling the clubhouse attendant (846-9478).

  3. Congregating before or after golf is allowed.

  4. The club’s computer is not available for posting scores.  Members should post score on-line on their own computers or cell phones.

On the Course

  1. The club’s motorized carts are available to rent.

  2. Club members may use their own motorized carts.

  3. The club’s push carts are available.

  4. Clubs are available to rent on a limited basis.  Each golfer must have his or her own set of clubs—no sharing.

  5. There is one large trash container near the 4th tee.  Golfers should save their trash during their round and dispose of it in this container.
